Third Rail Moves (Us) Forward

Third rail powers thousands of transit kilometers worldwide, and the preferred solution globally is an electrical grade aluminum rail with a stainless-steel cap.

This solution is far more efficient than some of the legacy products that remain in the market today. However, the exit of one of the primary suppliers of aluminum third rail has left the market scrambling for new, backward compatible solutions.

Enter Conductix-Wampfler, a global leader in electrification technology. Early 2026, they launched their newest welded-cap rail product, which advances the third rail industry by taking a fresh look at all the parts.

For the rail itself, Conductix-Wampfler kept the global standard of a 4,500 ampere bar while offering cap thicknesses of 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm. In many cases, they are able to match the previous supplier’s profiles for ease of transition. One of the primary improvements is the welding methodology, replacing one contact-surface weld with two welds at the base of the cap. As the weld cools, this creates intimate contact with the faying surfaces, between which is added a layer of conductive grease. This provides better contact and conductivity for the train’s collector.

For the other parts, Conductix-Wampfler also managed to increase the integrity of the performance while reducing the weight and material used. For example, the claw which holds the rail to the insulator. A small part, but indicative of the work they are doing to look at every aspect of a system. The claw uses a new tested alloy which is designed for higher flexibility and reduces the raw material by 25.3% while maintaining the same mechanical strength, allowing for dynamic stresses in five directions.

By rethinking every third rail component (ramps, insulators, brackets, covers, expansion joints, feeders, splice bars, anchors, etc.), Conductix-Wampfler has created a system which provides customers of the previous supplier a plug-and-play solution so there is no market interruption.
